Forest School is a type of unique learning model that offers people of all ages from toddlers to adults the opportunity to learn personal, social, technical, and environmental skills in a natural environment. The Forest School model of learning was created from the Scandinavian approach to learning outdoors. It emerged in the 1960s, and is the basis for the Forest Kindergarten and Waldkindergarten learning philosophies. It incorporates various research based educational theories focusing on the role of play and nature on human development, which include: John Amos Comenius’s research on holistic learning, Jean Piaget’s research on cognitive psychology, and Maria Montessori’s theory of individuality and independence in learning. The Forest School model takes the Scandinavian outdoor learning philosophy and research based learning theories and adapts them to fit the cultural needs within each region. Since the development of Forest School in Britain, the Forest School model has spread to many countries across Europe, China, North America, Australia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Russia, New Zealand, and Scandinavia. It has taken on many new forms to fit the cultural and environmental needs within each region, including: Beach Schools, Bush Schools, and Jungle Schools.
